Here’s what corporate titans in yoga and fitness don’t want you to know.

You Can’t Make Yoga Smarter – Part 1

As the weather warms, what seeds am I planting for As the weather warms, what seeds am I planting for future growth? What do I wish to harvest?
🌱
Beginning last fall, my intensive somatic studies started up again after a two-year pandemic hiatus. While I’m thrilled to be back in the Body-Mind Centering classroom, learning in a way that deeply serves me so that I may better serve my students and clients, I’m noticing that I’m in an interesting and somewhat uncomfortable place in my teaching. Somatics have long been a compliment to my yoga practice, an inroad for balancing the outer forms of yoga āsana, prāṇāyāma, chanting, and seated meditation with granular tools for valuing and investigating the inner transformative experiences of these practices. And sometimes, I feel itchy to be further along than where I am, impatient to know what my teaching will look like and how it will transform as I become a practicing Somatic Movement Educator. I’m almost there, but I’m not there yet.
🌱
So I am cultivating seeds of patience. The patience to be where I am now, in sometimes uncomfortable inquiry, without rushing into where I will be, in five or ten or fifteen years. I am sowing the seeds of my best teaching, and they may not fully blossom for a long time, because learning to become my most skilled and sensitive teaching self is a process, the fruit of the conversation among my students and me and my own practice now. And even when these seeds do blossom, as both yoga philosophy and somatics have taught me, is there really anywhere to get to anyway? What does it matter if I’m only looking ahead and not invested in the present moment?
🌱
Join Bex for Ecstatic Chill, a slow flow, yin, and restorative practice which takes place on Sunday evenings on or around the new moon. Only on the Connective platform.

Rebalance - not your typical Pilates class
Saturday, April 23
11am-12pm EST
48-hour replay available if you can’t attend live

Hustle culture must die. For some, the beliefs of late-stage capitalism permeate many aspects of our lives–even the way we take care of our bodies (or don’t). Embrace rest. Embrace softness. This is not your typical Pilates Mat class. In order to counterbalance vigorous activity, recovery is crucial. Move your body and explore sensations by utilizing pre-Pilates, some contemporary Pilates, and myofascial release techniques.

This free community class is appropriate for all levels and will focus on the lower body and feet–areas of the body vital for balance. Props are strongly recommended.

Recommended props:
* a pair of Franklin Balls (or soft density balls)
* Soft foam roller
* Light resistance band
* Yoga blocks

To join us, head over to our and sign up! To attend LIVE or receive the recording, you must sign UP. Head to our links and click on MONTHLY COMMUNITY CLASS.

During the onset of the Pandemic, a group of like- During the onset of the Pandemic, a group of like-minded individuals from different walks of life, diverse gender identities, different teaching styles, yet sharing some of the same hopes and ideals, came together with hopes of starting a conversation on changing the wellness industry a whole.

The overlapping theme we all shared was this idea of "change ."

✨

Today, the wellness industry promotes a lack of diversity, transparency, accessibility, and the continued colonization of yoga. Although improving, these instances and others need to be acknowledged and addressed for the wellness industry to support its diverse population.

✨

We the Connective formed to elevate the idea that teachers of many different mixed healing modalities could develop a business model built around change that is Cooperative owned and geared towards this goal. Barak Obama once said that "change is not easy but always possible."
Change can include supporting our teachers to make a living wage and something as simple as building racial equity.
What Does change look like for you?

✨

As mentioned before, at The Connective, teacher owners support each other. The structure supports our individual and collective success, and we take action to support and include the students in that success.

✨

An essential part of this structure is fundraising. The Connective first began accepting donations via Patreon and Paypal; with the help of these platforms and our community, we built a new online platform where we can now accept donations on our website. Your donation helps us continue our work serving our community and fulfilling our mission of making yoga, Pilates, and fitness financially available to our growing community. We are grateful for your support and belief in our work. Your funding makes a difference for us, but your presence in our community is where the actual value lies. If you share our visions, you share our success

✨

Spring invites us to emerge once again into its warmth and light.  In this re-emergence, we can rise up from the roots we’ve nourished and lessons learned from the quiet of Winter, along with what we’ve witnessed during the pause and reckoning of the last few years.

In this community class, we will shine light on what we are re-merging into: commitment to action, rest, love and authentic leadership.  Let’s look together at what we are deciding to carry forward, reclaim, and what we want to leave behind.

Movement and Yoga Asana will center on shoulder mobility and hip opening, supported by breath and mindfulness prompts.  This intentionally curated class will offer a reset in restorative rest.

Practice is open to all levels.

Props are not required but two blocks or books and a blanket are recommended to have close as support.

🌸It’s vital to have daily rituals to maintain 🌸It’s vital to have daily rituals to maintain equilibrium and this has been especially necessary during the pandemic when our routines shifted dramatically, and we were faced with such fear and uncertainty. Also, I find it essential to keep my mind steady during hostile political times so I can stay informed, discern accurate reportage from misinformation, and find ways to offer help.

A daily movement practice allows me to stay embodied, focused, and strong; a regular meditation practice keeps me attuned to the present and reminds me of my gratitude for the kind-hearted people in my communities and the love I have for my work and life. I aim to nourish myself with good food, poetry, music, art, walks in nature, and rest. I participate in organizing work, teach a lovely, bright community of students, write, talk with beloved friends, and catnap with my two cats. I’m learning the names of the flowers, plants, and trees I see on my walks. All of these rituals and routines keep me whole, well, and compassionately engaged with the world.

Did you know we have a bookshelf on Bookshop.org? Did you know we have a bookshelf on Bookshop.org?

Bookshop.org is a B-corp organization which operates as an online bookstore. But rather than giving your money to a megalomaniac billionaire, proceeds are forwarded to support brick & mortar bookstores. Our teacher-owners have carefully curated a bookshelf to share works that span many genres and interests. As an affiliate, any purchase from our bookshelf earns us a small commission, supporting our fundraising efforts, without any additional cost to our community!

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett was contributed by @gailberry and can be found under the BIPOC Voices and LGBTQIA+ sections of our bookshelf.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths y “Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.”
- Maya Angelo

I am passionate about teaching because I love learning, and many moments in my time as a teacher have taken my breath away and expanded my paradigm, as much as any of my time spent as a student has. Whatever I’m teaching, whether it’s one-on-one or a group class, āsana, anatomy, or philosophy, being in community is the best teacher of all. This is where the real surprises arise.
